Sermons &c

Sermons are a principle part of my writing. For several years, I have served as a pastor, and a missionary, and a guest preacher. I am currently a part of a youth ministry at Praise Presbyterian Church, and have the opportunity to preach at our youth service about once every month. I have posted some of my sermons below in several formats. They are available on the web, as well as in PDF and audio formats when available. The PDF versions of the sermons are formated for preaching, so expect strange line breaks and funny font changes throughout, but they better express the spoken style than the web versions.

I hope they will be a blessing.

"The Church Is..."
A high school youth sermon. This was part of a sermon series on the Apostle's Creed. This sermon has to do with "I believe...the holy catholic church." This sermon is pretty long, but has a nice illustration and uses examples from scripture that are unusual for this topic. The scripture is Mark 4:35-5:20. The sermon was first delivered at Praise Presbyterian Church in Somerset, NJ on 15 February 2009.

"Why the Sermon"
A sermon aimed at youth (high school), asking the question, "Why do we have preaching in our Sunday service?" The response is very standard Presbyterian, but I hope the sermon helps to shed light on something that is most often taken for granted in our church service. While the scripture is not overly used in this sermon, key inspiration for me came from Isaiah 6:5-8. The sermon was first delivered at Praise Presbyterian Church in Somerset, NJ on 28 September 2008.

"The Substance of Things Hoped For"
My "goodbye" sermon to the good people of St. Paul's UMC in Boise City, OK. The theme is faith, and I drew a lot from Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling, though not as much as I would have liked. ;-) The texts for the sermon are Hebrews 11:1-3 and Genesis 22:1-14.

"A Missionary Encounter with the Gospel (or Three Missions Stories)"
A remix of the "Defining Mission" sermon below. The idea is basically the same, but the sermon itself has been refined, and the format has been given more structure with the help of three different missionary stories. This sermon was delivered at St. Mark's UMC in Tulsa, Oklahoma on 27 July 2008.

"The Trinity: A Sermon in Three Parts"
A sermon for Trinity Sunday, delivered at St. Paul's UMC in Boise City, OK on 18 May 2008. This is a teaching sermon concerning the doctrine of the the Trinity.

"When We Shall Be Freed"
My first original sermon delivered on 18 March 2007 at Eiko Kyoukai, one of my churches in Japan. The text is Malachi, and it's theme is the Problem of Evil.

Children's Sermons

"The Mission"
This is a fun, little children's sermon about our duty as Christians to spread the message of God's love to everyone we meet. It's based on the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20. It takes two people.
"DE-FENSE!"
This chidren's message uses 1 Peter 3:15 as it's text. (...always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.) It only takes two people, along with some crowd participation.

Bible Studies

The Devil and His Grandmother (Romans 1:16-32)
A Bible lesson on the Fall and salvation using the Grimm fairy tale as a discussion point.
The Ten Commandments
A rather lengthy lesson on the 10 Commandments, dealing with the Old Testament interpretation, Jesus' reinterpretation, and the relationship between the law and sin Paul brings up in Romans chapter 3.
